Cold Weather + Light Powder

November 29, 2006

It has been really cold (by Whistler standards) the past few days. Yesterday it was 20 below freezing Celsius (-4 degree Fahrenheit). The snow was amazing. Nice and chalky where it had been skied and nice, light and deep where it was fresh.

My wife, Shelley, and I made our way behind the Harmony lift and skied a really nice line. One thing that was kind of strange was a new lift running. Yes, the new lift is turning and will change the way we ski Whistler mountain. I remember when they added the Harmony lift. Prior to that we used to ski the Peak chair until all the powder was gone and then we would move over towards the Harmony bowls. Then the chair lift went in and you had to decide where you wanted to ski more...tough decisions, really!

By the way did you know -40 degree Celsius = -40 degree Fahrenheit. Any way you slice it, that is too cold for me!

Snow, Snow, Snow in Whistler

November 26, 2006

It's been a while since my last post. That's because I've either beeen SKIING WAIST DEEP POWDER or DIGGING MY CAR OUT TO GET TO THE SKI HILL!

Yes, we have mid winter conditions to start the season here in Whistler. If you're not into deep powder that's ok. Well, sort of. The good news is that the Whistler Film Festival is due to start next week. The bad news is, you need to get over it and start skiing powder!

I promise to get some photo evidence of the snow!

That's it for now.

See ya on the slopes.

06/07 Season Shaping Up

November 13, 2006

Things in Whistler are shaping up nicely. We had a stunning fall and now it has turned into winter in a week. There are rumours that Whistler Blackcomb are thinking of opening early which has everyone excited to say the least.

I am looking forward to this season for a variety of reasons. Firstly, my daughter has her second season in ski school. As you can imagine the kids here turn into rippers in a hurry! One week they are cruising around on the magic carpets (an escalator type of lift) and the next week they are skiing down from the top of the Whistler gondola.

Another good reason to be excited - after several seasons of personal skiing I am going to start guiding with extremelycanadian again. This is really the best of both worlds. I get to meet cool people and ski the slopes I would normally be skiing. The owners, Pete Smart and Jill Dunnigan are awesome. The program rocks too.

And, with the temperatures and precipitation we've been having I am going to get good enjoyment out of the new gear I am skiing on too! A pair of Rossi Squads will do nicely in the waist deep powder!

So, with a trip to the Ullr party later in the week, and the way the snow is falling now, this is shaping up to be one of the best seasons I've had in Whistler (this is number 14 for me).

Whistler Blackcomb to Receive More Snow

November 08, 2006

Well,

We had a pretty wet week up here. Ok, it was really wet!

There is some good news though. The clouds cleared and there is still a ton of snow in the alpine. And, more snow is on the way.

This really is one of the most difficult times of year. The ski season is only weeks away but if there is a chance to open early usually Blackcomb will do it.

So, everyone in town continues to look up.

What else can be said. Snow, snow, snow, snow.....

Snow in the Whistler Valley

November 02, 2006

It's true. It has been really cold here for the past week. The ground is frozen rock hard and we've received snow to the valley a couple of times. In fact, it is snowing lightly as I write this.

So, what does this mean? As noted in my earler post, everyone becomes a snow soothsayer right before the season starts. Is this going to be a good season?

One thing I can say for certain. Anytime my butt lands on a chairlift rather than a chair in the office life is good!

I also saw the snow makers going full tilt this morning on both Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. Even though we receive a ton of snow throughout the season, we like to get things started with a little of the man made stuff. It also ensures we have good coverage mid-mountain throughout our season (November-June).

So, if you're wondering how things are looking in Whistler I have one word.

Awesome.
