Soggy Weather

October 26, 2006

Everyone in Whistler knew that the beautiful weather we were having the past couple of weeks was not going to last. We can't have awesome skiing without a little rain. Actually a lot of rain is what it takes to get our season up and running.

Every season we start skiing on the mid mountain. When we finally hit the alpine it is an absolute boulder field. But it only takes days of snow to fill this in so that we can ski there.

This brings up another point. If, on the off chance there is some liquid sunshine in the valley while you are here on vacation - do not despair! It means it is snowing on the mountain. And usually not too far above your head. So, don't sit in your room and pout. Don't sit in Starbuck's crying into your tall skim milk decaf latte. Get your butt into the gondola and go up the hill.

Ride da' powder!

That's it, that's all.

The Wait is Almost Over

October 20, 2006

Anyone who has been in Whistler longer than the person they are talking to becomes a snow forecasting expert at this time of year. You can hear it everywhere you go. How much snow are we going to get this year? When is the mountain going to open? Is this going to be a good season?

Invariably there is a long pause. Some serious thought goes into the question. And the answer is always the same. This is going to be an epic season!

If that isn't your view, something is wrong. We are now talking WEEKS not MONTHS before the mountains are due to open. Next it will be days...

I have to say, I am especially excited to get the season under way. After a few seasons of skiing casually I am planning to start guiding again. I am really looking forward to it!

I mean can you think of a better way to spend your time than searching for powder stashes?

I didn't think so.

Stay tuned...

Impending Pain

October 04, 2006

The arrival of a new winter season brings so many things. Thoughts of snow falling lightly, laughing with friends on the chairlift, awe-inspiring views and, inevitably, BURNING THIGHS!

It seems that no matter how much time you spend in the gym, riding a bike or running you will be able to link 3 or 4 turns before you're writhing in pain wondering what ever possessed you to wake up at 5:30 in the morning to drive to the hill, wait for the lifts to open, and then ski on an inch of snow.

Then a few seconds passes. The legs feel good again. You love skiing again. There is no sport on earth that touches the exhilaration of skiing. 3, 2, 1, GO!

Arggh my thighs! I have to stop. I am in agony!

You remember this - be honest.

New boots - not much more to say.

I'll keep you posted.

Don't forget to stretch!
